What's the Lectionary?

The Revised Common Lectionary is usually simply referred to as the Lectionary. It is a schedule of four different scripture readings assigned to each Sunday.  The four readings are taken from The Old Testament, the Psalms, the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John), and an Epistle (the rest of the New Testament).   The Lectionary follows a three year pattern, and within that three year pattern, all of the major stories and topics of the Bible are covered.
The practice of following the Lectionary traces its roots back to ancient Jewish worship practices. The scripture passages in the current Lectionary have been developed and adopted by the vast majority of denominations in North America , including all of the mainline Protestants denominations and the Roman Catholic Church.
